Error tolerance

The ability of a system to remain safe when users make mistakes.

Error tolerance is a system’s ability to stay safe when users make mistakes. In cybersecurity, this means the design does not assume perfect behavior: it uses guardrails, safe defaults, confirmation steps, access limits, and rollback options so one wrong click, typo, or misconfiguration does not become a major security or privacy failure.

Error tolerance matters because many real incidents start with ordinary human error rather than advanced exploitation. A resilient system reduces the blast radius of mistakes by limiting privileges, warning before risky actions, and making abnormal activity easier to detect. Defenders use it in privacy-by-design, data loss prevention, and admin controls; attackers often try to exploit the opposite, relying on confusing interfaces, rushed operators, or unsafe defaults to trigger unauthorized exposure. Good error tolerance does not remove responsibility—it helps security hold up when people are imperfect.
