ERP customization is the process of modifying enterprise resource planning software so it matches unique business rules, exceptions, or workflows. These changes can include custom reports, hard-coded approvals, bespoke integrations, and altered data flows. While customization can improve operations, it also increases technical debt and makes the system harder to patch, test, and upgrade safely.
In cyber security, heavy customization matters because every added workflow can create a new attack surface. Hidden logic may weaken authorization checks, obscure audit logs, or route data through integrations that are poorly monitored. Attackers often look for these weak points to abuse permissions, inject malicious input, or move laterally through connected systems. Defenders reduce risk by keeping the ERP core standard, moving special logic into controlled extensions and APIs, enforcing least privilege, and reviewing custom code for logging, validation, and secure update paths.
