An epic is a large work item used in agile planning to group related stories under one broader goal. It is meant to stay flexible: as teams learn more, the epic can be refined, split, or reprioritized while still preserving the main outcome.
In cyber security, epics often organize multi-step work such as patch campaigns, identity hardening, logging improvements, or detection engineering. They matter because security programs depend on clear intent as much as clear tasks. If an epic changes repeatedly without keeping its original rationale, teams can lose sight of the control they are trying to achieve, creating backlog drift and weak auditability. Defenders reduce that risk by stating the security outcome, success criteria, and approval reason inside the work item, so later edits do not erase why the work exists.
