Environment segmentation

The practice of separating test, development, and production systems so access cannot spill across boundaries.

Environment segmentation is the practice of separating development, test, staging, and production systems so that access, data, and credentials do not flow freely between them. Each environment should have its own network paths, identities, secrets, and approval rules. The goal is to stop a mistake or compromise in one place from reaching sensitive live systems.

In cyber security, segmentation reduces blast radius. If a sandbox, evaluation job, or internal tool is overprivileged, an attacker or buggy workload can pivot into production, exfiltrate data, or trigger changes that were only meant for testing. Strong segmentation is especially important for AI systems with tool access, because a model can call APIs, read files, or execute commands through connectors. Defenders use separate accounts, tight firewall rules, allowlisted endpoints, and logging to enforce boundaries. Good segmentation turns access control into an architectural control, not just a policy.
