Entry barriers

The cost, complexity, and effort required to start and grow a business.

Entry barriers are the cost, complexity, and effort needed to start and grow a business. In cybersecurity, the term matters because lower entry barriers let small teams or even individuals launch products, services, or attacks with less capital, fewer staff, and more automation. Tools such as cloud hosting, open-source code, and generative AI can reduce the work needed to build software, but they can also reduce the work needed to create phishing kits, malware, or fake support operations.

For defenders, lower entry barriers cut both ways. They help security teams move faster with leaner operations, but they also mean more vendors, integrations, and AI workflows must be governed carefully. A startup that depends on a few systems may be easier to run, yet a single weak password, exposed API, or misconfigured model can create outsized risk. Good controls such as access management, logging, testing, and human review help keep speed from becoming fragility.
