Endpoint defense

security software designed to detect or block malicious activity on a device.

Endpoint defense is security software that protects individual devices such as laptops, servers, and workstations. It may detect malware, block suspicious processes, monitor behavior, and alert defenders when a device starts acting like part of an intrusion.

It matters because many attacks begin or end on endpoints: a phishing attachment opens, a malicious script runs, credentials are stolen, or ransomware encrypts files. In Windows environments, endpoint defense can help stop privilege escalation tools, lateral movement, and destructive payloads before they spread. Attackers therefore often try to disable these controls, tamper with agents, or exclude their own processes from scanning. For defenders, signs that endpoint protection has been turned off, altered, or bypassed are high-value warning indicators, especially when combined with unusual account activity or other signs of internal compromise.
