EncryptInterceptor is an Apache Tomcat clustering component designed to protect session-related data exchanged between cluster nodes. In a distributed Tomcat deployment, nodes may replicate sessions or share state so users can move between servers without losing their login or application context. EncryptInterceptor sits in that trust path and helps keep that inter-node traffic confidential and harder to tamper with.
This matters because clustered application traffic often contains sensitive session identifiers, authentication state, and internal control messages. If an attacker can bypass or weaken EncryptInterceptor, they may be able to observe or manipulate data that should remain protected, reducing the security of the whole cluster. Defenders should verify whether clustering is enabled, confirm that encryption and related interceptor settings match current guidance, and remove unnecessary components from the replication chain. In attacks, bypasses typically matter when the application uses session replication or inter-node trust; in defense, the same area is checked during hardening and configuration reviews.
