Emulated USB device

A software-created device profile that mimics a physical USB peripheral.

An emulated USB device is a software-created hardware profile that pretends to be a real USB peripheral, such as a keyboard, storage device, or vendor-specific accessory. It presents the identifiers and behaviors that operating systems expect during device discovery, so the host may load drivers, query descriptors, or start installer workflows as if physical hardware were attached.

This matters because USB trust is often built into automated setup paths. In security research and attacks, a convincing emulated device can trigger Plug and Play logic, driver installation, or vendor utilities that run with elevated privileges. That can turn a simple device-connection event into a privilege escalation or code-execution path, especially when signing and device checks are assumed to equal safety. Defenders reduce risk by restricting USB redirection, limiting installer privileges, and monitoring unexpected device identities and driver activity.
