An employee-based subscription is a licensing model in which the price is calculated from the number of employees in an organization, rather than from the number of installed copies, servers, or named users. Vendors may define “employee” broadly, sometimes including contractors, part-time staff, or affiliated personnel, so the exact counting rule matters as much as the list price.
For cyber security teams, this model affects asset management, budgeting, and compliance. If licensing is based on headcount, adding virtual machines, cloud workloads, or temporary staff can increase cost without changing the software footprint. That can push organizations to delay upgrades, limit environments, or seek third-party support, all of which can affect patch cadence and exposure to known vulnerabilities. Defenders should map the vendor’s counting rules to HR records and system inventories so support coverage stays accurate and security updates are not blocked by a licensing dispute.
