Electronic lab notebooks

digital research logs that can contain experiments, methods, and proprietary findings.

Electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) are digital systems used by researchers to record experiments, methods, observations, results, and related files. They replace or supplement paper notebooks and often integrate with instruments, databases, and collaboration platforms. Because they hold proprietary findings and detailed experimental workflows, ELNs can be highly valuable intellectual property.

In cyber security, ELNs matter because ransomware operators and data thieves target them for leverage. Stealing or threatening to leak notebook contents can expose drug discovery efforts, formulas, assay results, and other sensitive research before publication or patent filing. Defenders should treat ELNs as crown-jewel data: restrict access, use strong authentication, segment storage, encrypt backups, and monitor exports or unusual downloads. Protecting ELNs helps limit both operational disruption and the risk of extortion based on confidential research.
