Economic return

The value a deployment generates relative to its cost, including labor, maintenance, and uptime.

Economic return is the value a deployment creates compared with what it costs to run. In cyber security, that means weighing the price of a control against the benefits it delivers: less downtime, fewer breaches, lower recovery costs, and reduced labor for monitoring and maintenance. A tool with strong protection but high operational overhead may have poor economic return if it slows teams or requires constant manual tuning.

This idea matters because defenders must choose where to spend limited budgets. Organizations often compare the economic return of patches, backups, endpoint detection, segmentation, and training by asking how much risk and disruption each one avoids. Attackers use a similar calculation. If a target is hard to exploit, well monitored, or expensive to keep access to, the likely return drops and the attack becomes less attractive. Good security design improves the economics for defenders and worsens them for attackers.
