Durability

The ability of a material or part to withstand wear, stress, and environmental exposure over time.

In cyber security, durability describes how well a system component keeps working after repeated stress, abuse, or exposure to hostile conditions. This can mean hardware that survives heat, vibration, and physical tampering, or software and data structures that remain reliable through crashes, power loss, or malicious input.

Durability matters because attackers often exploit weak points that fail over time: worn-out storage, fragile embedded devices, and services that break under load or malformed requests. Defenders improve durability with resilient hardware, integrity checks, redundant storage, crash recovery, secure logging, and regular patching. In practice, a durable security design is not just hard to break once; it keeps behaving predictably after many attempts to disrupt it.
