The driver installation workflow is the sequence Windows uses to verify, load, and configure a device driver before the hardware can be used. It covers checks such as signature validation, package selection, service creation, and the handoff into the kernel or related system components.
This workflow matters because drivers run close to the operating system core and often receive high trust. If an attacker can influence the process, they may be able to load malicious code, abuse a vulnerable driver, or trigger code execution with elevated privileges such as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Defenders treat this path as sensitive because it can become a privilege-escalation route, a persistence mechanism, or a way to bypass normal user-space controls. Hardening steps include restricting who can install drivers, enforcing signing policies, monitoring driver load events, and investigating unexpected hardware-triggered installation activity.
