Downstream effects

Secondary disruptions that may follow if core services, credentials, or linked systems are impacted.

Downstream effects are the secondary problems that can follow when an attack touches core services, user credentials, or systems connected to the original target. The first compromise may only affect one server or one account, but the impact can spread to email, file shares, identity systems, backups, partner integrations, or operational tools.

In cyber security, this term matters because the visible breach is not always the full story. Attackers often use stolen credentials to move laterally, which can widen disruption well beyond the initial entry point. Defenders look for downstream effects when assessing business impact, restoring services, and deciding what else must be isolated or reset. In a ransomware-style incident, a public victim listing may suggest possible harm, but the real operational risk depends on whether linked systems were actually reached and whether trust relationships were abused.
