Domain-level compromise

A compromise affecting an organization’s central identity or directory layer, which can expand attacker reach.

Domain-level compromise means an attacker has gained control of an organization’s central identity or directory layer, such as a domain controller or equivalent authentication system. This is more serious than taking over a single endpoint because the identity layer decides who can log in, what they can access, and which systems trust them. Once that layer is affected, an intruder may impersonate users, create accounts, reset credentials, and move laterally across the environment.

This matters in cyber security because domain control can turn one breach into broad enterprise access. It often appears after stolen credentials, privilege escalation, or abuse of trusted administrative tools. Defenders watch for unusual privileged logons, changes to group membership, new trust relationships, and unexpected directory modifications. Strong MFA, tight admin separation, network segmentation, and detailed logging help reduce the chance that a domain compromise goes unnoticed.
