Domain-level access

broad administrative control over an environment or account domain.

Domain-level access means broad administrative control over an environment or account domain, such as a Microsoft Active Directory domain, cloud tenant, or managed identity realm. A user or operator with this level of control can often create accounts, reset passwords, change policies, access shared resources, and move across many systems without needing separate approval on each host.

In cyber security, this matters because it turns a single compromise into enterprise-wide reach. Attackers may steal domain administrator credentials, exploit a privileged service, or abuse a session to gain this access and then deploy ransomware, exfiltrate data, or disable defenses. Defenders look for unusual privilege escalation, new admin accounts, policy changes, and logins from unexpected locations or times. Limiting standing privileges, using multi-factor authentication, and monitoring privileged activity are key ways to reduce the impact of domain-level access.
