Document Inspector is a Microsoft Office feature used to scan a file for hidden or non-obvious content and remove it before the document is shared. It can surface items such as hidden text, comments, metadata, tracked changes, headers and footers, and other embedded information that may not appear in normal editing or viewing modes.
In cyber security, this matters because hidden document content can leak sensitive data or carry unwanted instructions. Attackers may use obscure fields, comments, or metadata to conceal information, while defenders use inspection and cleanup to reduce exposure before documents are sent outside an organization or reused in automated workflows. When office files are fed into AI assistants or collaboration tools, inspecting them first helps prevent hidden prompts, stale data, and other trust-boundary problems from surviving into the next version of the file.
