A DOCTYPE is a declaration at the start of an HTML document that identifies the document type and helps a parser determine how to process the markup. In modern HTML, the usual form is <!DOCTYPE html>. It is not an HTML element; it is an instruction interpreted by the parser.
DOCTYPE handling matters in security because parsers may behave unexpectedly when declarations are malformed or processed by server-side rendering code. In the Angular context, malformed DOCTYPE input was associated with a denial-of-service flaw: parsing could enter an infinite loop and consume CPU, disrupting request handling. Defenders should apply framework and parser updates, and test how server-side rendering handles malformed input without exposing production systems to unnecessary risk.
