DIY

Short for do it yourself, referring to projects built by individuals rather than mass-market vendors.

DIY is short for “do it yourself.” In cyber security, it describes tools, systems, or projects built and maintained by an individual or small group instead of a commercial vendor. A DIY setup might be a home lab, a custom monitoring script, or a hobbyist device assembled from off-the-shelf parts. The term often appears in hardware projects, but it also applies to software and security operations.

DIY matters because custom-built systems can be flexible, educational, and cheaper than enterprise products, yet they also depend on the builder’s own testing, updates, and hardening. Attackers use DIY methods too, such as hand-crafted malware, custom payloads, or one-off phishing infrastructure. Defenders use DIY approaches for rapid prototyping, detection engineering, and lab environments, but they must watch for weak authentication, exposed services, and unpatched components. In security, “DIY” usually means more control, but also more responsibility.
