Distributed work is a work model in which employees and teams operate from multiple locations rather than a single central office. In cyber security, this matters because identity, device, and network trust must extend beyond one protected building. Each remote laptop, home network, cloud app, and collaboration account becomes part of the security perimeter.
Attackers often target distributed work environments through phishing, stolen credentials, insecure personal devices, or misconfigured remote access. Defenders respond with multi-factor authentication, VPNs or zero trust access, endpoint monitoring, patching, and least-privilege permissions. Good governance also includes clear rules for who can log in, from where, and on what device. When distributed work is well secured, it can improve resilience and flexibility; when it is not, it widens the attack surface and makes unauthorized access easier.
