Distributed infrastructure

A setup where services and computing resources are spread across multiple locations.

Distributed infrastructure is a system in which services, storage, and computing are spread across multiple sites instead of a single data center. In cyber security, this design improves resilience and performance, but it also creates more paths to protect. Each location, network link, management plane, and identity system becomes part of the trusted environment, so weak configuration or poor visibility at one site can affect the whole platform.

Attackers often target distributed environments by abusing exposed management interfaces, stealing credentials, or compromising a smaller edge node and using it as a foothold into connected systems. Defenders use segmentation, strong authentication, centralized logging, and automated failover to reduce risk. Good distributed design limits blast radius, preserves service continuity, and makes it harder for a single compromise to cascade across the environment.
