Dirty shutdown

An unclean database stop caused by power loss or interruption.

A dirty shutdown is an unclean database stop that happens when a system loses power, crashes, or is interrupted before it can flush all in-memory changes to disk. The database is left in an inconsistent state, often with pending transactions recorded in log files but not fully committed into the main data file. In Microsoft Exchange, this can prevent the EDB from mounting until recovery or repair is performed.

From a security and operations perspective, dirty shutdowns matter because they can signal underlying storage instability, hardware failure, or unsafe shutdowns after an attack or outage. Defenders look for them during incident response, restore validation, and forensic review because the shutdown state affects what data is trustworthy and what must be replayed from transaction logs. The fix usually involves cleanly replaying logs, restoring from backup, or using repair tools as a last resort.
