Digital sustainability

The capacity to maintain digital services over time without degrading quality, support, or value.

Digital sustainability is the capacity to keep digital services useful, supported, and secure over time without losing quality, ownership, or operational value. It is not just about keeping a system online; it also means preserving data integrity, documentation, user support, and the ability to update components as needs change.

In cyber security, digital sustainability matters because neglected systems become weak points. Outdated software, abandoned accounts, stale dependencies, poor backups, and unclear ownership can all create attack paths or make recovery difficult after an incident. Defenders improve sustainability through lifecycle planning, patch management, access reviews, reliable monitoring, and clear responsibility for data and service maintenance. When these controls are missing, services may still function, but they degrade quietly until a failure, compromise, or compliance problem exposes the damage.
