Digital HEDIS

NCQA’s broader modernization effort toward more computable, machine-readable quality measures.

Digital HEDIS is NCQA’s effort to turn Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set measures into computable, machine-readable rules. Instead of relying only on manual chart review, these measures can be expressed so software can extract evidence from claims, clinical documents, lab feeds, and structured records. The goal is to make quality measurement faster, more consistent, and easier to automate.

In cyber security, Digital HEDIS matters because it increases the amount of sensitive health data moving through automated pipelines. That creates attack surfaces in document ingestion, cloud storage, model outputs, and the systems that map evidence to a measure. If permissions are too broad, logs are weak, or data is altered, the result can be privacy loss, compliance failure, or incorrect quality reporting. Defenders use strict access control, audit logging, versioning, and human review checkpoints to keep machine-readable measures trustworthy.
