Device tunnel

A VPN connection that establishes before user sign-in, supporting device-level access.

A device tunnel is a VPN connection that comes up before a user signs in. Instead of authenticating a person, it authenticates the machine itself, usually with a device certificate or other machine-based credentials. This lets a managed endpoint reach corporate services at boot, on the lock screen, or during recovery and maintenance.

In cyber security, device tunnels matter because they preserve device-level access for patching, policy enforcement, certificate renewal, and remote management. They are commonly used in Always On VPN designs so administrators can manage laptops even when no user session exists. Defenders should validate that the tunnel only exposes the services the device needs, and monitor for certificate errors, routing mistakes, and failed tunnel negotiation. Attackers may try to abuse or disrupt the machine-authenticated path to block management traffic or to persist at the device layer if they obtain trusted certificates or VPN configuration.
