Developer supply chain

The tools and systems that help build, test, and ship software.

The developer supply chain is the collection of tools and systems used to build, test, sign, and ship software. It includes source control, package managers, IDEs, CI/CD servers, build agents, artifact repositories, secrets stores, and deployment pipelines. Because these systems handle code and credentials, they are high-value targets for attackers.

In cyber security, the developer supply chain matters because a weakness in one trusted tool can affect many downstream systems. Attackers may poison packages, steal tokens from build servers, tamper with build outputs, or abuse a compromised plugin or update channel. Defenders reduce this risk by inventorying build tooling, applying patches quickly, isolating build environments, restricting secrets, verifying artifacts, and monitoring for unexpected changes. Protecting the developer supply chain helps protect the software that is delivered to users.
