Developer account

The publishing identity used to upload and manage extensions in a store.

A developer account is the publishing identity used to submit, update, and manage software in an app or extension store. It ties a set of releases to a named publisher profile, payment details, and store permissions, even if the software itself is distributed under a different brand or product name.

In cyber security, developer accounts matter because they are a trust anchor. Users often judge an extension by its store listing, but attackers can abuse that trust by creating lookalike accounts, rotating between multiple accounts, or reusing one account to push malicious updates. Defenders review developer history, account age, verified identity, and release behavior to spot fraud. If an account suddenly publishes a browser extension with broad permissions or network access, that is a warning sign that the publisher may be hiding the real operator behind a familiar-looking product.
