A dev server is a development-only web server used to run and test an application while code is changing. It often supports features such as live reload, rapid asset rebuilding, and local file access, so it is designed for convenience rather than strict hardening. Because of that, it may expose debug routes, relaxed origin checks, or file-serving behavior that would be unsafe in production.
In cyber security, dev servers matter because they are often deployed on the same machines that hold secrets such as .env files, cloud keys, or CI/CD settings. If a dev server is reachable from the network, a file-read flaw or misconfiguration can turn it into a secrets disclosure point. Attackers frequently scan for exposed development services and use them to steal credentials, impersonate applications, or pivot into cloud and infrastructure systems. Defenders should keep dev servers off public interfaces, patch them quickly, and treat local configuration files as sensitive data.
