Designed dissent

A workflow pattern that deliberately preserves disagreement so errors are easier to spot.

Designed dissent is a workflow pattern that intentionally keeps independent judgment and disagreement visible instead of pushing people and AI systems toward quick consensus. In clinical AI, this can mean asking the system to consider alternative explanations, state uncertainty, or challenge a clinician’s initial assumption.

This matters because automation bias can lead users to over-trust machine advice, while a sycophantic model may echo the user’s view rather than assess it independently. A workflow that makes room for challenge can help expose errors before they are accepted or acted on. Practical safeguards may include prompts to review alternatives, clear stop rules, and a fallback path for continuing without the AI. Designed dissent is a risk-management approach, not proof that a particular system is accurate or that errors will be prevented.
