Deferred payment

A payment method where the charge is settled at a later time.

Deferred payment is a payment method in which a charge is authorized now but settled later, often in a billing cycle, invoice period, or installment schedule. In digital commerce, this can mean the customer receives goods or services before the money is actually transferred. The delay changes the risk profile: the merchant must trust that the account remains valid, the customer will repay, and the transaction will not be disputed.

In cyber security, deferred payment matters because attackers often target the gap between authorization and settlement. Fraudsters may exploit stolen cards, account takeover, or synthetic identities to make purchases before detection. Defenders monitor for unusual spending patterns, velocity spikes, mismatched identities, and repeated failed verification attempts to reduce loss. Deferred payment also affects chargeback handling, subscription abuse, and fraud controls such as 3-D Secure, risk scoring, and transaction holds. Understanding when money is actually settled helps security teams spot where abuse can hide.
