Decryption key

a credential or artifact used to unlock encrypted files.

A decryption key is a credential or cryptographic artifact used to reverse encryption and make protected data readable again. In ransomware cases, attackers may hold the only key that can unlock encrypted files, which turns access into leverage and forces victims to choose between downtime and negotiation.

Decryption keys matter because they are often the difference between recovery and permanent data loss. In defense, incident responders may try to verify whether a claimed key actually works, whether it was obtained lawfully, and whether it matches the specific malware family or encryption scheme. Attackers may steal, generate, or sell keys, while defenders focus on backups, key management, and careful validation before restoring systems. A real decryption key should be handled as sensitive evidence, not just a convenience item.
