Decentralized infrastructure

A distributed setup that avoids dependence on one central host.

Decentralized infrastructure is a distributed system that does not depend on one central server, domain, or hosting provider. Instead, its functions are spread across multiple nodes, services, or networks, which can make the system harder to shut down or block at a single point.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often use distributed infrastructure to make command channels, leak sites, and negotiation portals more resilient against takedown efforts. If one host is removed, the rest may still keep operating. Defenders face a larger problem set: they may need to disrupt many components, not just one machine. The same idea also appears in legitimate defense, where redundancy and distribution can improve availability and reduce single points of failure. The key security question is not whether infrastructure is decentralized, but whether that design makes abuse harder to interrupt and monitor.
