DCS

Distributed Control System, a platform used to manage complex industrial operations across multiple controllers.

A Distributed Control System (DCS) is an industrial platform that supervises and controls complex physical processes through multiple controllers spread across a plant or site. Unlike a single central controller, a DCS divides control tasks across networked units, operator consoles, and engineering stations so large operations can keep running with tighter process oversight and redundancy.

DCS matters in cyber security because it sits directly between digital commands and real-world equipment. If an attacker disrupts a DCS, the impact can include lost visibility, unsafe process changes, or a forced shutdown for verification. Common attack paths include compromised remote access, weak credentials, exposed engineering workstations, and trusted vendor connections. Defenders reduce risk with network segmentation, strict access control, patch management, logging, backup configurations, and tested recovery procedures. In practice, protecting a DCS is about preserving both safety and availability, not just stopping malware.
