DCIM

Data Center Infrastructure Management, software and processes for tracking capacity, energy, and operations inside a data center.

DCIM, or Data Center Infrastructure Management, is the software and operating process used to track what is installed in a data center and how it is performing. It records rack occupancy, power draw, cooling capacity, device inventory, alarms, and sometimes links to design and procurement data. In practice, DCIM becomes the operational map of the facility: it tells teams what exists, where it is, and whether it is within safe limits.

In cyber security, DCIM matters because it protects the integrity of infrastructure records. If an attacker can alter asset data, abuse a weak API, or gain unauthorized access to monitoring dashboards, operators may miss rogue devices, false capacity readings, or signs of physical tampering. Defenders use DCIM to validate changes, support incident response, and correlate security events with power and environmental conditions. When DCIM is integrated with BIM or ERP systems, strong access control, logging, and versioning are essential so the record stays trustworthy from buildout to live operations.
