Data timer

a countdown marker shown on some extortion listings.

A data timer is a countdown marker displayed on some ransomware or extortion listings. It is usually presented as a deadline for an alleged victim to pay, negotiate, or respond before the attackers claim they will publish stolen data, increase pressure, or take another step. The timer is a psychological pressure tool, not proof that data was actually exfiltrated.

In cyber security, a data timer matters because it can change how defenders prioritize triage. Even when the public listing is redacted or vague, the timer can signal an active extortion attempt and justify verification work, legal review, and incident response readiness. Defenders should treat it as a signal to investigate exposure and internal logs, but not as confirmation of a breach on its own.
