A data strategy is the plan an organization uses to collect, classify, store, govern, share, and use data across its systems. It defines what data is needed, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how its quality and lineage are maintained. In cyber security, this matters because data is both an asset and a target: if it is poorly organized, sensitive records are easier to expose, hard to protect, and difficult to recover after an incident.
In real attacks, weak data strategy often shows up as overexposed databases, excessive permissions, shadow copies, or unclear ownership of sensitive files. Defenders use a strong data strategy to apply least privilege, encryption, backup discipline, retention rules, and monitoring based on data sensitivity. It also supports incident response, because teams can quickly identify what was accessed, what was altered, and what must be contained or restored. A good data strategy reduces risk while making analytics and automation safer to use.
