Data sprawl

the uncontrolled spread of copies across files, devices, and services.

Data sprawl is the uncontrolled spread of copies of information across files, endpoints, cloud apps, email, and collaboration tools. It usually starts when users export data for convenience, then duplicate it for analysis, sharing, backups, or offline work. Each copy can drift away from the original system of record and from the controls attached to it.

In cyber security, data sprawl matters because every extra copy creates another place sensitive data can leak, be stolen, or be edited without oversight. It weakens access control, logging, retention, and classification, making it harder to know who has the latest version or where regulated data ended up. Attackers often benefit from sprawl by finding exposed exports, stale files, or unmanaged devices. Defenders try to reduce it with governed workspaces, stricter export rules, centralized storage, data loss prevention, and audit trails that keep analysis inside controlled systems.
