Data reconciliation is the process of comparing records held in different systems and resolving discrepancies so they agree. It matters when information changes, moves, or is retired—for example, when a platform shuts down a service and must match user accounts, purchase histories, and digital entitlements.
In cyber security and operations, accurate reconciliation helps prevent errors such as missed refunds, duplicate credits, or access remaining after an entitlement expires. Teams can compare databases or transaction logs, identify mismatches, and investigate before applying corrections. Reconciliation supports trustworthy records, but it does not by itself prove that data is authentic; organizations should also use access controls, audit trails, and validation checks to protect the underlying records.
