Data discovery

The process of finding and mapping sensitive data across an organization’s systems.

Data discovery is the process of finding and mapping sensitive data across an organization’s systems. It scans cloud services, file shares, databases, collaboration tools, and older archives to identify where personal, financial, regulated, or otherwise critical information is stored, how it is classified, and who can reach it.

In cyber security, data discovery matters because you cannot protect what you cannot see. Discovery feeds classification, labeling, retention, logging, access control, and incident response. In real defenses, it helps security teams locate exposed records in Microsoft 365, SaaS apps, data warehouses, or legacy systems so policies match the actual data landscape. In attacks, weak discovery leaves hidden sensitive stores unmonitored, making exfiltration, misconfiguration, and over-permissioned access harder to detect. A strong discovery program turns scattered data into a living inventory, giving defenders the visibility needed for Zero Trust, audits, and breach containment.
