Data center efficiency is a measure of how well a facility turns electrical power into useful computing work. It includes not only servers and storage, but also the energy spent on cooling, power conversion, and day-to-day operations. A highly efficient site delivers more computing per watt, while an inefficient one wastes energy on heat and overhead.
In cyber security, efficiency matters because power and cooling limits affect availability, cost, and resilience. Attackers may try to overload infrastructure with traffic, abusive workloads, or resource-heavy tasks that increase heat and strain operations. Defenders watch efficiency to size capacity, reduce waste, and keep security systems such as logging, monitoring, and backup services running reliably. Better efficiency can also lower operating costs, freeing budget for hardening, segmentation, and redundancy. In practice, efficiency is both an operations metric and a security concern.
