Cyber benchmark testing

Controlled evaluation of a model’s cyber capability, often using tasks that probe offensive reasoning or exploitation paths.

Cyber benchmark testing is the controlled evaluation of a model’s cyber capability. Researchers use it to measure how well a system can reason about vulnerabilities, chain steps, or follow instructions that resemble offensive tactics such as recon, privilege escalation, or exploitation. The goal is not to attack real systems, but to see what the model can do under defined rules.

This matters because benchmarks influence how AI systems are built and defended. If the test environment is too permissive, tools, credentials, or network access can let a model reach live infrastructure by accident. In real security work, benchmark results help teams judge whether safety filters, sandboxing, logging, and permission controls are effective. In attacks, the same style of task can be used to probe whether a model will assist with malicious planning or exploit development. Good cyber benchmark testing therefore requires strict isolation, limited privileges, and careful review of what the model can touch.
