CVFS stands for Commvault File System, the storage layer used inside the Commvault platform stack. It helps manage how backup data, metadata, and related files are stored and accessed across the system. In a backup product, this layer is especially important because it sits close to the data protection workflow and may interact with cluster services, administrative functions, and sensitive configuration data.
From a security perspective, CVFS matters because flaws in storage or file-system components can have outsized impact. An attacker who reaches this layer may gain opportunities for information disclosure, service disruption, or, in some cases, deeper compromise if the bug affects privileged processing. Defenders treat CVFS as core infrastructure: they track exact versions, apply vendor fixes promptly, and verify every node in a cluster is updated. In practice, protecting CVFS is part of protecting the backup and recovery environment itself.
