CVE-ID

A public identifier used to track a specific vulnerability across vendors, scanners, and advisories.

A CVE-ID is a public identifier assigned to a specific vulnerability. It gives defenders, vendors, and researchers a shared label for the same flaw, even when different products, advisories, or scanners describe it in different ways. That makes patching and risk management much easier because teams can verify exactly which issue is being discussed.

In cyber security, CVE-IDs matter because they connect intelligence to action. A scanner may flag a host by CVE, a vendor advisory may list the same CVE with fixed versions, and an incident responder can use it to search logs, confirm exposure, or prioritize remediation. In real attacks, criminals often target known CVEs soon after disclosure, while defenders use the same IDs to track mitigations, monitor coverage, and prove that updates were applied.
