Custom malware

Malware built or adapted for a specific target or environment.

Custom malware is malicious code built or modified for a specific victim, device, or network environment. Unlike commodity malware, it is often tuned to the target’s operating system, architecture, security controls, and normal traffic patterns. That makes it harder to detect with generic signatures and behavior rules.

In cyber security, custom malware matters because it usually signals a deliberate intrusion rather than opportunistic abuse. Attackers may use it to keep persistence, avoid detection on an appliance or server, or perform follow-on actions from a trusted foothold such as a VPN gateway or edge device. Defenders look for unusual binaries, suspicious configuration changes, and process or network behavior that does not match the device’s normal role. On systems with limited endpoint monitoring, integrity checks and log review are especially important.
