Cryptographic discovery is the process of locating every place where cryptography is used in an environment, including applications, devices, services, certificates, APIs, firmware, and third-party systems. It is the first step in understanding an organization’s crypto footprint and is closely tied to crypto inventory and crypto agility.
This matters because security teams cannot replace or harden what they cannot see. Discovery helps identify vulnerable algorithms, expired certificates, weak key sizes, hardcoded secrets, and dependencies on legacy RSA or ECC. In defense work, it supports migration planning, compliance checks, and post-quantum readiness. In attacks, hidden crypto often appears in embedded software or vendor products, where defenders may miss exposed trust chains or outdated encryption until exploitation or decryption becomes practical.
