Crypto theft is the unauthorized taking of cryptocurrency or access to digital assets. It can involve stealing wallet keys, seed phrases, exchange credentials, session tokens, or malware that drains funds from a wallet or account. Because blockchain transfers are typically irreversible, a successful theft can be difficult to undo once assets move to an attacker-controlled address.
In cyber security, crypto theft matters because it blends financial fraud, identity theft, and technical compromise. Attackers may use phishing, fake job offers, malicious files, remote-access tricks, or compromised accounts to reach a victim’s wallet or exchange account. Defenders reduce risk by protecting private keys, using hardware wallets and multi-factor authentication, verifying counterparties, limiting wallet approvals, and treating any request for logins, seed phrases, or unusual downloads as suspicious.
