Cross-platform builds are malware versions compiled to run on more than one operating system, such as Windows, Linux, or macOS. Instead of relying on a single target platform, attackers maintain separate builds or code paths so the same campaign can spread across mixed environments.
This matters because many organizations run a blend of desktops, servers, virtual machines, and cloud workloads. A ransomware group with cross-platform builds can pressure more victims and reach systems that store backups, host applications, or manage data pipelines. For defenders, the risk is not only the malware itself but the broader coverage it gives an operation. Detection and response should account for platform-specific indicators, segmented networks, hardening of Linux and Windows assets, and security tools that monitor each operating system consistently.
