A cross-functional team is a small group made up of people with different job roles, such as a subject matter expert, a product owner, and an engineer. Instead of working in separate silos, the team combines business knowledge, technical implementation, and operational awareness in one workflow.
In cyber security, this matters because many risks are created by bad design decisions, unclear ownership, or controls that do not match how a system is actually used. Cross-functional teams help reduce those gaps by designing access, logging, approvals, and rollback plans together from the start. They are also useful in incident response, where security, engineering, legal, and operations need to act quickly without losing context. Attackers often exploit confusion between teams, so shared responsibility and fast coordination are defensive controls in their own right.
