Critical Infrastructure Resilience

The ability of essential services to withstand disruption and restore operations quickly and safely.

Critical infrastructure resilience is the ability of essential services such as power, water, transportation, manufacturing, and communications to continue operating during disruption and to restore safe operations quickly afterward. In cyber security, it covers more than preventing compromise: it also includes recovery, continuity planning, and the ability to return systems to a known-good state after malware, configuration errors, outages, or sabotage.

This matters because industrial and public-service environments often depend on specialized controllers, engineering workstations, and tightly controlled configurations. If those assets are altered or destroyed, recovery can be slow unless backups are complete, tested, and tied to change management. In real attacks, especially ransomware and destructive intrusions, resilience depends on isolated backup copies, restore drills, and clear procedures for validating that recovered systems are safe before they are brought back online. Good resilience reduces downtime, limits safety risks, and makes disruption less effective as an attack goal.
