Credentialed scanning is vulnerability testing performed with authorized user or administrator access. Instead of looking at a system from the outside only, the scanner logs in and checks patch levels, installed software, local services, permissions, and configuration details that unauthenticated scans may miss. This makes it a deeper form of assessment, especially for endpoints, servers, and network devices.
In cyber security, credentialed scanning matters because many serious weaknesses are not visible without access. Missing patches, unsafe settings, weak local policies, and exposed privileges often show up only after the scanner can inspect the host directly. Defenders use it to validate hardening, measure compliance, and prioritize remediation. Attackers benefit from similar access after they steal credentials or compromise an internal account, because it lets them map a network more precisely and identify the next targets. For that reason, credentialed scanning is both a defensive quality check and a realistic view of internal risk.
